There are so many cool things to do and see and experience in Yankee-land. To illustrate, this weekend, we travelled up to the state of New Hampshire for a hangi organised by the NZ Consulate to New England. It was pretty surreal; 500-odd kiwis having a hangi in the middle of New Hampshire countryside. However my favourite part of the trip was going to New Hampshire itself - a state whose tagline is, get this, 'Live free or die'. Apparently Americans don't get the term 'bogans'. But HOW BOGAN IS THAT?! And they really lived it too - helmets on motorcycles are not a legal requirement. We passed many bikies living their own 'Live free or die' dream. Their byline should really be 'Live free, or get fed through a straw with a nurse giving you a daily wash, or die'.
Anyway, even though there is all this cultural entertainment surrounding us, this week I've been a little bit longing for home. So in my usual fashion, I'm doing some re-arranging and mentally re-arranging the house in Tairua. (Having returned with our winnings from the American lotteries, to fund all this of course).
One of the things I'd really, really love is a good kitchen. Ideally one with a walk-in pantry, heaps of bench space, it goes without saying that there would be outrageous storage, and a big social kitchen bench.
A big bench would be great to spread out all my mess when I'm having a project day in the kitchen, to sit around, serve nibbles, and have 'cocktail hours' on, I even think I could convince Carl it would be a good idea because he could spread out when he's cutting up his latest catch (although all the gross stuff would definitely not be coming near these beauties below).
